E-Beam

E-Beam

Election-beam physical vapor deposition (or ‘e-beam’ for short) is a form of thin-film coating technology in which a material is bombarded with an electron beam under vacuum. The electron beam transitions the material from a solid into a gaseous state, and the material is then coated onto a surface (in this case the surface of an optical element) within the line of sight of the vacuum pull.  The lower the vacuum, the lower the mean free path from the material source to the substrates, generating better, stronger and more homogenous thin film layers.  Precision Optical has multiple e-beam chambers that can produce everything from enhanced metal coatings, to advanced multi-layer broadband dielectric coatings.
